Dr. Jean Hamilton, M.D.
Dr. Jean Hamilton is a psychiatrist currently based in Albuquerque, NM. She earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Medical School in 1977. Dr. Hamilton next went to the Michael Reese Medical Center at the University of Chicago to complete a Clinical Research Fellowship in Adolescence. She served her residency at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill North Carolina Memorial Hospital, completing it in 1981. Dr. Hamilton worked with the National Institute of Mental Health at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD, completing a Clinical Neuropharmacology Fellowship in 1983.
Dr. Hamilton has extensive experience in clinical work in private practice and as a consulting or locum tenens psychiatrist at numerous healthcare institutions throughout the United States. She performed clinical duties while serving as a tenured full Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Duke University in Durham, NC, for which she has worked since 1992. She has an extensive research and publication history, with over 100 publications. Her research focused primarily on clinical depression. Dr. Hamilton is now a professor emeritus at Duke University and continues her research.
Dr. Hamilton’s research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and other prestigious publications, such as Health Psychology, American Journal of Psychiatry, and the Journal of Women’s Health. She has been an expert consultant to many federal government agencies and professional organizations, included the National Institute of Mental Health, the FDA, and the APA. Her work has been profiled in both professional and public educational publications, and she has contributed as an author to several prize-winning books and publications. Some of her numerous professional and academic awards include holding the first endowed chair in Women’s Health at a medical center in the U.S. (Medical College of Pennsylvania/ Hahnemann University) in 1995 and being named a “Women’s Health Hero” by the American Health Magazine in 1997.
